Frequently Asked Questions
How much does basement waterproofing cost?
It depends on the cause and the size of the basement. Sealing one leaking crack costs far less than a full perimeter drain system. Ask for a written estimate that names the cause of the water, the exact work, and the warranty terms, and compare at least two.
Is interior or exterior waterproofing better?
Exterior work stops water at the wall but requires excavation and costs more. Interior drainage manages water that reaches the wall and is usually less disruptive. Many homes are well served by interior drainage plus better grading and downspouts.
Can I fix a wet basement myself?
Some fixes are DIY-friendly: cleaning gutters, extending downspouts, and regrading soil away from the house. Waterproof paints rarely solve active leaks. If water returns after rain, have the cause diagnosed.
Do I need a sump pump?
If water collects under the slab or at the footing, a sump system gives it somewhere to go. If you already have one, consider a battery backup, since storms that cause flooding often cause power outages too.
Is a crack in my basement wall serious?
Thin vertical cracks are often shrinkage. Horizontal cracks, stair-step cracks in block walls, cracks wider than about a quarter inch, or walls that lean inward should be looked at by a professional.
Does homeowners insurance cover a wet basement?
Coverage varies widely by policy. Seepage and groundwater are often excluded, and sump backup may need a separate rider. Check your policy or ask your agent.
